Jumping Higher Programs: The dilemma in choosing

One of the problems faced by basketball or volleyball players looking on information on how to increase their vertical jump height to improve their athleticism is how to judge whether a particular program is the best one for them. This is especially true for programs that are available online.

This is not a simple question to answer because each athlete is different from the other and one program that worked for one athlete does not ensure that it will also work for another. No two basketball or volleyball players were born the same and needing the same things at the same time.

Fact is, in any sport training, the best way to train is still to get a personal coach or trainer that can supervise your training and development and can serve as the objective observant to help you develop your skills in a manner that is scientific, safe, and most of all, effective.

However, not all of us can afford to hire a full time nor even a part-time sports trainer. Hence, for many of us, the best course would be to consider the available training programs being offered online. And since there are a lot of them out there, There should be a way to evaluate which among them are the good ones.

This is the reason why I came up with this website: to give a guide on how to choose the apples from the lemons and arrive at a good decision by choosing the best programs out there.

Read on.

How to choose the best jump higher training program

The good news is that there are certain characteristics that you can look for in a volleyball or basketball vertical training that will give you an indication of how good it may be. Below I enumerate those things that you should should keep an eye for:

  1. Does it promote a multi-aspect approach to jump higher training? This is very important. Jumping does not involve the legs and leg muscles alone. The program must have a big picture approach that contains sub elements that contribute to the whole. Jumping does involve the leg muscles but it is also important to address other aspects like injury prevention, form, technique, mental and psychological conditioning, sports nutrition, etc. If any one of these is missing in the program, cross it out.
  2. Does it emphasize the importance of core conditioning and the importance of core stability training? This one is somewhat counterintuitive. Since jumping is an activity powered by the legs, some people think that core strength training has no relevance in doing workouts to jump higher but in reality, this is a very important consideration. Rapid and powerful movements of the arms and legs are anchored on the stability of the spine that runs the length of the shoulder to the pelvis. You can achieve a higher jump if the core muscles are well-trained to support the activity.
  3. Does it promote the correct use of plyometrics? Increasing your vertical jumps will most certainly involve the use of plyometric exercises which are some of the most strenuous and stressful exercises out there. It uses rapid and strong movements of big muscle groups, in this case the leg muscles, to train them to do what is needed for them to do in the vertical jumping process.
  4. Is the author of the program an expert in the field of sports training, particularly vertical jump training? You would not trust an accountant to teach how to jump higher, would you? If the author is a true jump expert, then you can be rest assured that what you are doing is a product of science and practical experience. Also, make sure that you can reach the trainer easily if you have questions related to your training. One unanswered question can become a huge snag in your development. If the author can be reached through email, chat, phone, then that is good indication about the quality of the jump higher program. An additional security would be if you could get in touch with previous students to get their testimonials.

If you are after a good program to help you learn to jump higher for basketball or volleyball, you need to be able to judge whether the training program you wish to adopt is a tried and tested program. The above guide should be a good help in your decision.

Thank you- very useful! I'm glad you emphasized the role the core plays in jumping as well. I always felt that my early day ballet training helped with my later college days of high jumping, because it trained me to jump with good posture and a fully activated core.
